The Zafety Lug lock® unit fits snuggly over two adjacent nuts on the truck wheel and is installed with the “name side” out after the wheels and nuts have been properly installed and the nuts have been properly torqued as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The Zafety Lug Lock® units create enough resistance between two nuts to minimize their ability to rotate and fall off. Zafety Lug Lock® is a wheel nut retainer not just a wheel nut indicator.

Loose lug nuts occur due to vibration of the wheel and expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes especially in situations where differing materials are in use (specifically aluminum rims and steel lug nuts and stud). Once one nut has loosened even slightly it amplifies the problem and other nuts will begin to loosen at a faster rate, ultimately leading to a potential wheel-off. If the wheel and lug nuts have been properly installed and torqued as per the manufacturer’s instructions, the secondary application of Zafety Lug Lock® stops the loosening process from beginning.

Note: The installation of Zafety Lug Lock® does not exclude the need for standard safety & maintenance procedures.

  • Nuts can be torque-checked without removing the Zafety Lug Lock®.
  • Quickly provides a clear visual status of the lug nuts at the time of inspection. Easy for both long-haul and short distance drivers to check the status of the lug nuts. Clearly visible in all light and weather conditions (rain, snow, icy and dirty conditions).
  • The Zafety Lug Lock® formulation can withstand extreme changes in temperature and continues to work in both high temperature environments created by frequent stop vehicles, typically waste removal and recycling collection trucks and in freezing rain, snow and ice conditions often experienced by snow plow operators. The Zafety Lug Lock® formulation is designed to withstand continuous operating temperatures from -40 degrees Centigrade (-40°F) to +160 degrees Centigrade (+320°F). This formulation also has slightly better performance in extreme low-temperature conditions by remaining more pliable. The high-temperature formulation has now become the standard for all Zafety Lug Lock® units because of its increased performance characteristics.
  • Proven in independent laboratory testing conditions and in independent dynamic testing at the Automotive Proving Grounds, New Carlisle, Indiana. See the Product Information page for testing results and Testimonials page
  • Awarded – received the Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award – See the Testimonial page for more information and video
  • Reduces the risk of wheel-detachment accidents. (Protects both the public and drivers while preventing fines, lawsuits, property and cargo damage).
  • Lowers maintenance costs – torque checking without removing Zafety Lug Lock®
  • Decrease equipment downtime by reducing the possibility of nut movement and wheel-end damage
  • Facilitates official roadside inspections.
  • Easy to install and remove
  • Affordable cost per wheel
  • Pays for itself by reducing the time required for wheel-end maintenance checks and lowers/eliminates the amount of wheel-end damage from loose nuts thereby reducing damage repair time.
  • 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects – reusable – lasts even longer when properly installed and removed

The most common sizes for the UK, Europe, Israel & some Australasia commercial transport industry are 4 1/8” (104.8 mm) stud center to stud center spacing with 1 5/16” (33 mm) or 1 9/32” (32mm) nuts. The 4 1/8” (104.8 mm) stud center to stud center spacing with a nut size of 1 3/16” (30 mm) is often used on a lift wheel. The newer low-loader/low-profile trailers often have either fewer stud/nuts or are a smaller 2.75: (69.9 mm) stud center to stud center spacing with 1 5/16” (33 mm) or 1 9/32” (32mm) nuts.

A high temperature Zafety Lug lock® formulation was developed specifically to meet the demands of stop-and-go vehicles specifically city transit buses. The high temperature Zafety Lug Lock® formulation is designed to withstand continuous operating temperatures from -40 degrees Centigrade (-40°F) to +160 degrees Centigrade (+320°F).  This formulation also has slightly better performance in extreme low-temperature conditions by remaining more pliable. Miscellaneous Vehicles

Companies using medium sized utility vehicles in the transportation, mining, landscaping, delivery, emergency and other sectors around the world and here in the USA are finding out how easy it is to use a secondary safety device, Zafety Lug Lock®, on their wheel nuts and the business advantage.  Designed specifically to address the stresses of stop-and-go vehicles and landfill long haul vehicles – companies use Zafety Lug Lock® to keep the public/construction & mining sites safe and their trucks in service by lowering the risk of wheel-offs and minimizing the risk of wheel-end damage from loose wheel nuts.

A multiple sizes of Zafety Lug lock® units have been developed for miscellaneous sized vehicles which exhibit the same nut loosening issues depending on the service activities of the vehicle.  Especially in the cases of part-time or temporary drivers, the Zafety Lug lock® unit visibility and easy to understand application supports training and use.  Mining vehicles which are often running 24/7 over rough terrain have other considerations where preventative safety is a key business decision. Landscaping vehicles which often haul small loads of sand, dirt and materials on a single axel trailer also find nut loosening/wheel-offs more of a problem.  The constant stop-and-go of curbside delivery vehicles also creates conditions where nut loosening can become a problem.
